Excellent photograph signed ''A. Einstein'', taken on 8 October 1934 at the podium at then Yeshiva College, the day Einstein received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. In his acceptance address, Dr. Einstein said, ''I believe that the Jewish love for the spiritual which constitutes the most valuable element in the Jewish community, is apt to disintegrate under present circumstances, under the influence of the general life-philosophy of our time, which is directed toward materialistic conceptions…The Jewish people has sustained through 2,000 years of severe hardships because it has regarded a tradition of love for the spiritual and the moral as its highest possession. Not external success but a deep, spiritual perception of life has been considered as the most desirable attainment…'' Just a year before Einstein gave this speech, and ten months after Hitler became German Chancellor, Einstein had left England for the United States, announcing he had decided not to return to Germany and to never again enter German ground. He never did. Black and white photo measures 3.75'' x 2.75''. Near fine condition.
