ALS in German, signed “A. E.,” one page, 8.5 x 11, October 2, 1950. Letter to mathematician Ernst Gabor Straus, concerning Einstein's work on the Unified Field Theory. In a highly technical letter, replete with mathematical field equations, Einstein discusses the progress of his work with his former assistant. Einstein is here at an early stage of formulating his final version of Unified Field Theory. Seeking to base the theory in an extension of his relativistic field equations for gravity, Einstein looks to find alternative spacetime metrics compatible with the field equations of General Relativity. Einstein’s efforts here ultimately resulted in his 1954 article on asymmetric field theory, Einstein’s last scientific work.

The Mount Everest of scientific problems, Unified Field Theory has defied scientists for more than a century. Einstein was a pioneer in the field, and he himself spent more than 30 years seeking its solution, working on the problem even on his deathbed. The present letter remarkably telescopes Einstein’s scientific work with gravity—evidencing him returning to his General Theory of Relativity and seeking its extension in a bold stretch of scientific imagination. Witnessing Einstein’s final heroic attempt to scale the heights of Unified Field Theory, the present letter is exceptional testimony to Einstein’s unique and powerful genius. In fine condition.
