Albert Einstein Autograph Letter Signed "A. Einstein." One page, 8" x 10.5", Princeton, New Jersey, nd. This letter is written entirely in German to a Dr. Casper. Dr. Casper is likely the noted urologist from Berlin, Leopold Casper on his 85th birthday. Leopold Caster was born in 1859 and died in 1959, so we can date this letter to 1944, when he would be 85 years old. The content of the letter is unusually metaphorical and nebulous for Einstein; after he congratulates Dr. Casper on his 85th birthday and his continued successful career he begins to discuss his regrets about the "Heuchler und Militarissten," (hypocrites and the military) and how they shamed the entire nation, themselves and the Institution. While he does not directly state that he is speaking about the Nazi's and Hitler, one can deduce from the probable date and tone that this is the case. Einstein was forced to flee Germany because of the hatred the Nazi's and Hitler held for him and his work. It is understandable that Einstein would view the Nazi regime as shameful and hypocritical. The Nazi's accused him of trying to promote and create "Jewish Physics" in contrast to the accepted "Deutsche Physik" (German Physics).

The letter is in very fine condition; usual folds are present. The entire letter is matted with fillets and blue silk alongside a picture of Einstein and a plaque bearing his name and dates of birth and death. The entire piece measures 28" x 23".
