Albert DuVannes (1881-1962) Original Oil Painting
Featured in this lot is this original, oil on canvas painting done by Albert DuVannes (1881-1962). On May 14, 1881, Albert DuVannes was born in Naples, Italy. He moved to America in 1894 along with his family. In 1903, DuVannes established a studio in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he painted numerous famous people, including railroad magnate James J. Hill. He also taught landscape and portrait painting at that time.
DuVannes relocated to New York City in 1910 and set up shop there. DuVannes traveled extensively across America during this time and painted alongside Will Foster and Benton Scott in California. After a while, DuVannes stopped painting and focused all of his attention on representing other artists in his gallery. In 1938, his son established a Los Angeles location for his gallery, which was later renamed the Adamson-DuVannes Galleries.
The painting shows a portrait of a man in a suit and tie looking towards the viewer. He has a small mustache and stares towards the viewer with no expression on his face. In the bottom right hand corner is the artist's signature reading, "A. DuVannes" in brown paint. The painting is in good condition overall with an area of missing paint in the bottom right hand corner and smaller areas of missing paint as well, but is still in good display condition. The painting measures 30 1/8" L x 25 1/4" W.
