This lot includes five hand-carved bark masks from Alaska Three of these handcrafted pieces are caribou skin masks by the Nunamiut Eskimo of Anaktuvuk Pass masks, the pass area is a city in North Slope Borough nestled in the heart of the Brooks Range.. For 50 years the Nunamiut of Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska have been making skin masks by a technique that they invented, casting wet caribou skins on wooden molds. The masks are so characteristic of the place that a skin mask made on a mold by any Alaska native person is often labeled an Anaktuvuk mask. The masks are even more closely identified with the village of their origin because they look like the people, and because the Nunamiut chose the mask face as the logo for their village corporation. These masks measure 4”x 3”, 6”x 8” and 12”x 8”. Two of the masks are made from bark, these measure 6”x 9” and 5”x 7” respectively. - HKA#65304
