Former Indiana Congressman William H. English autograph letter signed, dated 15 June 1868, regarding ''the Matter of Alaska.'' The U.S. agreed to purchase Alaska from Russia in 1867 but did not appropriate funds until July 1868. The letter to a Mr. Colke reads in part: ''...I discussed that Matter of Alaska...they all say that General Grant has said nothing on the subject of the purchase of Alaska...W.H.E.'' Letter, written in brown ink on two 4.75'' x 8'' sheets, has folds and smudges, else very good.
