Color satin-finish 14 x 11 photo of Shepard on board the USS Champlain, his Freedom 7 capsule, secured on the deck behind him, signed in blue ballpoint. Notation on reverse from the signature’s recipient reads, “Shepard Signature obtained personally by A J Cipriano at Mayflower Hotel June 26, 1979. National Space Institute Conference Wash D.C.” In fine condition, with a few trivial edge bends and creases, and light skipping to a single letter of signature. Identified as image S61-02727 in the Johnson Space Center Digital Image Collection, this photograph was taken on May 5, 1961. It is titled by NASA: “Astronaut Alan B. Shepard is seen on the deck of the U.S.S. ‘Champlain’ after the recovery of his Mercury capsule.” Splashdown, 15 min, 28 seconds after launch, was in the Atlantic Ocean.
