Al Taliaferro - Original Comic Strip Art for Do
Al Taliaferro - Original Comic Strip Art for Donald Duck Daily dated 12-2-38 (Walt Disney Enterprises, 1938). From the very first year of this classic strip comes this killer example featuring Donald and his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Donald first appeared in the 1934 cartoon classic, "The Wise Little Hen", and was soon co-starring with Mickey Mouse in such features as 1935's "The Band Concert." Real fame would visit the little duck with the raspy voice in 1937, with his first starring role, in the cartoon "Donald's Ostrich." Knowing that they had a good thing on their hands, Disney was quick to feature Donald in their Silly Symphonies newspaper strip, which he soon took over. Donald's nephews came onboard in 1938, and Donald's fame was set. Guiding the comic strip were writer Bob Karp and artist Al Taliaferro. Taliaferro had been working for Disney since 1931, inking Floyd Gottfredson on Mickey Mouse, and then drawing the Silly Symphonies strip. Considered by many to be one of the all-time great Disney artists, Taliaferro continued on Donald Duck until his death in 1969. The strip offered here, with an approximate image area of 21" x 4.5" and in very good condition, displays some moderate glue staining in each panel, no doubt a remnant from the benday screens that would have acted as shading. Still, the bold, attractive linework makes this strip a joy to behold. Jerry Weist, in his Comic Art Price Guide, Second Edition, estimates that fewer than five Donald Duck strips from 1938 are known to exist, making this a rare find indeed. Don't let this one pass you by. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
