Al Smith 1920s Cigar Label by W. Mulford & Son of Unadilla, New York. This 9" x 7" printed inner label with embossed gold highlights features a portrait of the legendary New York Democratic politician Al Smith. The photo used is the same as some of the campaign buttons from his unsuccessful 1928 bid for the presidency, where he lost in a landslide to Herbert Hoover who was riding the crest of economic prosperity. Smith, the first Catholic to win a major party presidential nomination, was a man of the people and identified himself with immigrants, particularly the Irish Catholics. Though brought to power by the Tammany Hall political machine, he remained untouched by corruption and was a leader in the Progressive movement. A label that will appeal to political collectors and cigar label collectors as well.
