Al Capp - Original Comic Strip Art for Li'l Abn
Al Capp - Original Comic Strip Art for Li'l Abner, Group of Two Dailies dated 2-5-48 and 2-6-48 (United Features Syndicate, 1948). One of the first "strips within a strip," "Fearless Fosdick" (credited to "Lester Gooch") was Al Capp's affectionate (?) parody of Chester Gould's Dick Tracy. Fosdick, who was Li'l Abner's "ideel," was a seemingly indestructible lawman with a jawline so sharp it could cut glass. Fosdick typically survived mishaps that would kill a lesser man. Fosdick strips were exceptionally popular with Capp's readers, and retain a high degree of desirability among collectors, many of whom remember the sturdy lawman fondly. The two consecutive strips offered here show the beginning of a Fosdick caper, as Fearless re-enacts a murder (with himself as the victim!), but always manages to be at least one step behind the evil mastermind. In excellent condition, each strip measures approximately 22.5" x 7" overall, and are signed by the artist. Although interest in Li'l Abner strips is normally high, owing to the popularity of Capp's creation, strips featuring Fearless Fosdick are some of the most coveted in collector's circles. This matched pair makes a particularly nice example, a wonderful addition to any collection. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
