<B>Akan (Ghana)</B></I><BR><I>Akua ba</B></I><BR>Wood<BR>Height: 13 inches Width: 5 3/8 inches Depth: 2 1/8 inches<BR><BR>This is one of the best known types in traditional African sculpture, its name, <I>Akua ba,</B></I> meaning “Akua's child”. The legendary Akua had a beautiful daughter after carrying one of these figures. Subsequently, many Akan women carry them on the back, as an actual child would be carried, to influence the birth of beautiful daughters.
