Bound in 3/4 red leather and red cloth, heavy raised bands on heavily gilt filigreed spines, green leather spine labels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. BINDING & HINGES TIGHT. In 1800, the Louvre Museum was designated as the repository and gallery for France's great art treasures. This collection of 343 full page COPPER ENGRAVED PLATES, records the the great works of art displayed at the Louvre before 1815, at which time most of these were returned to their rightful owners. The text is in French and English. Volume 1 - 25pp text [1] 26pp text, followed by 79 full page plates with tissue guards and descriptive text, 4 text illustrations and a title vignette. Volume 2 - 121 full page plates without tissue guards, with descriptive text, and a title vignette. Volume 3 - 14pp text "History of Engraving", 14pp text, 8pp text "History of Painting", 8pp text followed by 61 full page plates with tissue guards and descriptive text, 8 text illustrations and a title vignette. Volume 4 - 9pp text, [1] 9pp text followed by 82 full page engravings with tissue guards and descriptive text, 4 text illustrations and a title vignette, with a Table Des Matieres at the end. The plates are discreetly stamped with ink on the back of the plates. Covers show darkening, edge and corner wear with some of the leather peeling, interior has occasional foxing. RARE & SCARCE.
