As hoards are found and new scholarship promulgated, our glimpses into ancient numismatics change. One of these parameters is the question of dating Greek coins, especially archaic ones. If catalogued in the 1960s, for example, these two "turtles" would be dated considerably earlier. Through R. Holloway's excellent research, published in the ANS Museum Notes 17 (1971) and Price and Waggoner's Archaic Greek Silver Coinage: The "Asyut" Hoard, and other scholars' work, we can be more confident in today's perspective of early Greek coinage.
