In Chinese characters, the artist has listed the names of all students in this offset, which were killed in the devastating earthquake in Sichuan in 2008. Printed in different colors and arranged in tight horizontal rows this results in a strip composition of iridescent coloring. As an unsigned poster edition the sheet accompanied the April issue of the art magazine ART. But 100 copies were signed by the artist and sold as a special edition at Art Cologne.

The offset print in colors is signed in the left margin in India ink ‘Weiwei’. It is in very good condition. The image measures 27 x 78.5 cm, the sheet 28.2 x 80.

Ai Weiwei (b. 1957)

Ai Weiwei was born in Beijing as a son of a poet and dissident, but grew up in Xinjiang, where the father had been exiled. In 1978 he began studying at the Film Academy in Beijing. From 1981 to 1993 Ai Weiwei lived in New York and completed his studies at the Parsons School of Design. He then returned to the Arts District Dashanzi in Beijing. Because of dissident behavior Ai Weiwei was arrested in April 2011. His passport was taken from him, so that until today he cannot leave China. (fea)
