Lot of 22 agricultural newspapers, the "Boston Cultivator," with many articles and references to the Civil War throughout. The newspapers, which are in excellent condition for their age, begin with two from 1846, then many from 1860 and 1861. There is one from April 13, 1861, announcing the Civil War, and many from the months to follow. June 29, 1861, contains a headline, "The Celebration of the Fourth." The article begins, "We would recommend that the coming 4th of July, the 85th Anniversary of our National Independence, be celebrated in every town in New England and all the other loyal States, thus demonstrating to the rebels of the disloyal States now under the rule of treason-plotters that our love for the Union, symbolized by the Stars and Stripes, was never more ardent than in 1861. ..." Besides the Civil War, the newspapers contain many historic references, anecdotes and poetry, in addition to the agri-news.
