Agnes Strickland: Lives of the Queens of England
Agnes Strickland: Lives of the Queens of England (Philadelphia: George Barrie and Sons, 1902-03), Alexandra Edition printed only for subscribers, number three of seven, in 16 volumes, vellum, purple cloth endpapers, rich gilt edges, profusely illustrated with intaglio plates, each in four printings (Japanese vellum, India paper, papier de Chine, and Holland handmade paper finished in watercolors), full-leather bindings in green and brown with gold lettering and decorations, inside covers bound in green and purple full leather with hand-tinted illustrations and gold decorations, 8vo (5.75” x 8.5”). The set also includes a companion folio (9.5” x 12”) containing an additional printing of each intaglio plate on satin. The folio case is also bound in green leather with gold lettering and purple cloth inside the front cover. Born in Suffolk, England, Agnes Strickland (1796-1874) and her sister, Elizabeth, collaborated on several mammoth histories of the royalty of England and Scotland. Though their style is now considered florid and mediocre, their works still provide useful research on centuries of British history. This stunning, elaborate edition published by George Barrie and Sons in 1902-03 was printed after a subscription campaign yielded only seven buyers, therefore being an incredibly rare set indeed. It simply is one of the most remarkable publications you’re likely to find. The 16 books (each of which includes a bookplate from a previous owner) are in fine condition: most have not been opened during the 105 years since their printing; the vellum, leather bindings and gilt edges are nearly like new; the green slipcases have minimal wear. The folio is in very good condition with some fading on the exterior due to its long-term exposure to sunlight; ribbons which had been used to close the case are no longer intact.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
