Joseph Henry Sharp is regarded as the father of the Taos Society of Artists. The highly educated artist arrived in New Mexico in 1883. He traveled throughout the West painting Native Americans and landscapes and settled permanently in Taos in 1912. His paintings of the Indian are highly prized and are in the permanent collections of the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, and in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C.
