It is believed to depict Aphrodite (called Venus by the Romans), the Greek goddess of love and beauty.<BR><I><BR>Venus de Milo</B></I> was discovered in 1820 inside a buried niche within the ancient city ruins of Milos on the Aegean island of the same name, also called <I>Melos</B></I> or <I>Milo</B></I>, by a peasant named Yorgos Kentrotas.
