Peter Paul Rubens' ‘Triumph of the Eucharist’ was a cycle of 20 carpets, which was ordered in 1626 for the Descalzas Reales Monastery in Madrid by Isabella Clara Eugenia of Spain and Portugal, the governor of the Netherlands. The carpets were woven in Brussels and are still in the Spanish monastery. The present oil sketch from the mid-19th century is a copy after Rubens' 'Fides Catholica’ (c. 1626). The oil painting by Rubens, which is based on the draft for the carpet, is located in the Musée des Beaux- Arts de Valenciennes. It is an allegory of the triumph of the Catholic Church over nature, philosophy and science. The issue was closely linked to the efforts of the counter-reformers of Rubens’ time.
The painting is in good condition, showing some framing marks and overpainting under UV light. It is framed in a beautiful gilded period frame. On the back is a label of the framer Hollerbach & Dieffenbach from New York. The frame is overall in very good condition with some blemishes. The overall dimensions with frame are 56.5 x 73.5 cm. The wood panel measures 36 x 52 cm. (cko)
