Jean Béraud (French, 1849–1935)
Title: Boulevard des Capucines and Vaudeville Theatre in Paris, 1889
Medium: Oil on canvas (after original)
Signature: Signed lower right “Jean Béraud – 1889”
Framed Dimensions: Approx. 34" x 40"

This elegant 19th-century Parisian street scene is a tribute to the celebrated French painter Jean Béraud, known for his masterful depictions of Belle Époque life in Paris. The composition captures a lively day outside the Théâtre du Vaudeville on Boulevard des Capucines—a favorite motif of Béraud’s, with his trademark precision in portraying urban figures, fashion, and architecture.

The work is bustling with detail: a mounted policeman stands confidently amid fashionable pedestrians, while a horse-drawn carriage waits outside the theatre. A misty palette of muted greys and rich umbers beautifully balances the pops of red and the shine of polished boots on wet cobblestones, all rendered in Béraud’s refined, naturalistic style.

While this piece is a fine studio reproduction or homage (as Béraud’s original oils are extremely rare and held in major museums or elite private collections), it nonetheless captures the atmosphere and grace of the artist’s original works.

Artist Note: Jean Béraud was one of the most prominent chroniclers of 19th-century Parisian life, often compared to Degas for his genre scenes. His works are held in the Musée d’Orsay, the Louvre, and the Hermitage.
