# After Francois Gerard Oil on canvas Portrait of Germaine Necker, Madame de Stael, accompanied by a letter from Madame de Stael to Lord Sheffield Inscribed and dated 1813 verso 12.75ins x 10.5ins Note: The letter reads: "I have been to Lord Sheffield's home several times in order to speak to him of my sad and deep interest in the cruel event that has just taken place.............I would very much like to know if there is a way of meeting Mr Gibbon on my journey...............the feeling I have for his friend is the reason, and that the well-known compassion of my Lord Sheffield for all that is unfortunate persuades me that I too have that right to his solicitude." In 1753 Gibbon fell in love with Suzanne Curchod, who was to become Mme de Stael's mother. The relationship was ended by his father and Gibbon remained unmarried for the rest of his life.
