African Luo Ogut Tigo Beaded Hat, measures 4'' x 6'', beautifully beaded in vibrant colors, cloth lining, from the Kenya or Tanzania Region, FYI: Nyanza region close to Lake Victoria (Victoria Nyanza) in both Kenya and Tanzania, Mid 20th century, cloth, glass beads Graphic and colourful undulating waves of beads encircle the sides of this hat, a type worn by men of the Luo tribe but after independence, it was adopted by other Kenyans. Hats of this shape originate in the Islamic world and were considered visual signs of wealth, wisdom and authority. The brilliant Tom Mboya, a Luo and prominent Kenyan political figure in the struggle against colonial rule, who was assassinated in 1969, is pictured on the cover of Time magazine in 1960 wearing a beaded Luo hat
