<td width="100%">
This is a large, old Southern Ethiopian hand woven basket with intricately worked leather straps supporting it around its circumference. This basket shares very strong affinities with similar storage containers used by other nomadic tribal groups in the vicinity of Southern Ethiopia, such as the Rendille of Northern Kenya or the Gabra of Somalia. See ?African Nomadic Architecture: Space, Place and Gender,? pg. 197 (Smithsonian, 1995) for an illustration of similar containers and how they would have been hung on a nomadic family?s tent. Basket is woven from red, yellow and natural colored materials, and in places has what appears to be a pitch surface to create a water-tight membrane, and is extensively encased in worked leather straps. The lid is secured with a leather thong. It is very old. The arid climate of that region can preserve perishable materials for a much longer period. It is likely early 20th century, possibly older. Very Good Condition. Height: 19 inches (48cm), Circumference: 30 inches (77cm).
