American Aesthetic Movement Walnut Writing Desk, ca. 1870-1890, attributed to Benjamin Pittman and William Fry's Cincinnati Women's Woodcarving Movement, Cincinnati, Ohio. 2 part cabinet, top section has a center 2 door cabinet with carved birds perched in different floral trees in inset panels, the crest with floating butterfly amongst a group of flowers and filigree, shell carvings at the tops of the posts and 2 drawer side sections, has extended carvings throughout, on the side panels and frame pieces are keyed through tenon construction. The base has a leaf carved drop front writing surface over a single drawer which also is a support for the lid, has turned support columns under corbelled brackets below and 3 large inset panels with filigree and avian carvings; the back side of the cabinet is carved all over and conceals a hidden compartment in the base. In very good condition and original finish. 61.75 in. high x 41.5 in. wide x 17.25 in. deep.
