Adolphus Busch Rare Letter About Theodore Roosevelt: "I Love Him -But..." Typed Letter Signed, two separate pages, on the decorative letterhead of "President's Office, Anheuser-Busch Brewing Association", 8.5" x 11", St. Louis, May 20, 1913, to journalist - and later, German Spy - George Sylvester Viereck. Here the beer magnate begs off discussing Viereck's possible entry into politics, choosing instead to talk about the recent presidential election. In part: "I believe you know my sentiments for Col. Roosevelt - I love him - but I am not in sympathy with his actions. If he had backed President Taft for another term, he would have been the greatest and most popular man in the United States; I think he made a great mistake splitting the Republican Party, and it is a question with me whether the American people will ever forgive him..." Normal wear, and a couple pencil notations not affecting text; otherwise quite good, with an exceptionally dark and bold signature. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
