DS, in German, one page, 8.25 x 11.5, March 17, 1938. The document reads (translated), in part: “From the attached list I have forwarded 25 foreign nationals for the Merit Order of the German Eagle as a designated group from the list.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Hitler. In very good condition, with three moderate horizontal folds, two punch holes to left edge, scattered creasing and toning, paperclip impression to top edge, and several pencil notations. Second integral page has a trimmed top right corner. Accompanied by a 3.5 x 3.5 replica of the Order of the German Eagle, an eight-pointed gilt-framed German cross of white enamel with four German eagles atop swastikas, with crossed swords.

This Third Reich award was presented to hundreds (if not thousands) of foreign diplomats who Hitler considered sympathetic to the Nazi cause. He had presented this award to several Americans, including Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh, and surprisingly, Prescott Bush—father and grandfather of future presidents George Bush and George W. Bush, who was one of the directors of the Union Banking Corporation, seized by the US government during World War II under the Trading With the Enemy Act. A chilling document with eerie undertones. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
