Rare ANS in German, one page, 7.75 x 5, personal letterhead, January 8, 1938. Brief get well note to an unknown recipient. In full: “Warmest wishes for a speedy recovery! Dearest Regards.” In fine condition, with vertical crease affecting first letter of last name of signature, and a bit of scattered light foxing.
Unique on so many levels, it must be noted that Hitler rarely took time to compose a handwritten note, as he had secretaries to tend to such tasks. Furthermore, this piece has been composed on his personal letterhead—with less than five known on the market. On the day Hitler wrote this note, a story was sent to The New York Times that “Chancellor Adolf Hitler does not desire that the struggle in Austria against Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg cease.” Schuschnigg had been strongly opposing Hitler’s advances to absorb Austria into the Third Reich. In February 1938, Hitler invited Schuschnigg to meet with him and demanded concessions for the Austrian Nazi Party. Schuschnigg refused, resigning in March 1938 before German troops crossed the border upon the invitation of the new Chancellor, Arthur Seyss-Inquart, the leader of the Austrian Nazi Party. A notably rare albeit “friendly” greeting from the madman who, at the time, was plotting his domination of Europe. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
