Partly-printed DS, in German, one page, 10 x 14, September 18, 1941. Headed in gilt “On Behalf of the German People,” the document reads, in part, “I appoint the Deputy Director Dr. Hans Ficker to the Reich Chancellery. I execute this instrument in the expectation that the appointee meets his duties conscientiously and justifies the trust that is proven to him by this appointment.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Hitler, signing next to the large blind stamped German eagle seal, and countersigned, “Dr. [Hans] Lammers,” Chief of Reich Chancellery. Document is housed in its original 10 x 14.25 heavy stock presentation folder emblazoned with a gilt German eagle, with vertical wings at its side, perched atop a swastika. In fine condition, with a few trivial edge and corner wrinkles.

At the Nuremberg Trials, Ficker testified that in 1942, he was invited to participate in discussions on “the final solution to the Jewish question” but, disturbed by the topic, sent a representative in his place. During the trials, he disavowed any knowledge of the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis during World War II. At those same trials, Lammers was convicted on a number of charges, including slave labor, being a member of criminal organizations, mistreatment of prisoners of war, atrocities against civilian populations in occupied countries, and plunder of occupied countries. In 1949, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison but was pardoned in 1952. Based on the testimony at Nuremberg and his list of crimes, it would appear that Ficker fulfilled the directive of this order, per Hitler’s order to meet his duties “conscientiously and (justify) the trust that is proven to him by this appointment.” A unique document from one of the darkest periods in world history.
