Unpublished photographic archive comprised of 16 matte-finish 4.5 x 3 photos showing Adolf Hitler and members of the army at the funeral march for General Erich Ludendorff in December 1937. The photos were taken by New York photographer Raoul 'Ral' Echeverria and affixed to both sides of one 11 x 14 scrapbook page. Hitler is seen in two images, walking alone in the procession; two others show close-ups of the casket, draped in an Iron Cross flag, passing by in the horse drawn caisson. The other images show a military band, soldiers lining the streets, and other members of the procession. In overall fine condition.

Ludendorff was one of the most prominent German military leaders and the chief engineer behind the management of Germany's effort in World War I until his resignation in October 1918. Postwar he became a nationalist leader and joined with Hitler in a failed attempt to seize power in the Beer Hall Putsch of 1923. Both were arrested, with Ludendorff and Hitler found guilty of treason and imprisoned; it was during this period in prison that Hitler penned his book Mein Kampf. By the time Hitler rose to power in 1933, Ludendorff had become a pacifist and no longer favored the Nazi party. When Ludendorff died on December 20, 1937, he was given—against his explicit wishes—a state funeral organized by Hitler, which is depicted here. A fascinating background story of the political conflict that resulted in Hitler’s rise to power.
