<B>Admiral Chester W. Nimitz Typed Letter Signed and Original Envelope</B></I>, on United States Pacific Fleet letterhead, 10.5" x 8", [Pearl Harbor], September 6, 1942. This letter to Mr. Robert O. McNiel of Roanoke, Virginia, reads in full "Dear Mr. McNiel:-- I take this opportunity to send along this acknowledgement of your request of August 9, 1942. / Being appreciative of the efforts of a collector, I am happy to have been of some assistance to you. / Sincerely," signed "<I>C. W. Nimitz</B></I>" followed by "C. W. NIMITZ, Admiral, U.S. Navy, Commander in Chief, United States Pacific Fleet." Admiral Nimitz sent this letter, via the Pacific Fleet Post Office in San Francisco, while stationed at Pearl Harbor, just nine months after the Japanese attack. He commanded the fleet during several crucial World War II battles in the Pacific, including Coral Sea, Midway, Solomon Islands, Philippine Sea, Leyte Gulf, and Okinawa. On September 2, 1945, Nimitz signed for the U.S. at the Japanese surrender aboard the USS <I>Missouri</B></I> in Tokyo Bay. Fine with original folds and two hole punches at top.
