Framed souvenir programme from opening night, Thursday, February 2, 1899 at The Victory Theatre San Jose, California. Having become a national hero following the victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War (with the loss of only a single crewman on the American side), Dewey was encouraged to run for president in 1900. So this appearance was on his victory tour of the country. In May, 1900, he withdrew from the race and endorsed William McKinley. Frame is 13 x 16 inches, program is 5 x 7 inches. His portrait is in high relief.
