Admiral Dewey Wooden Tabletop Coin Drop Game
Admiral Dewey Wooden Tabletop Coin Drop Game Circa 1900. Offered here is a rarely-seen product manufactured during the "Deweymania" surrounding his impressive naval victory over the Spanish Fleet at Manila during the Spanish-American War. George Dewey was welcomed back to America as a hero and it was even suggested that he run for president in 1900 but he decided not to in favor of McKinley's re-election. This wooden game is 19.5" x 10" x 6.5" (at the base- it slants upward to 1" at the very top). There is a "Drop Here" slot near the top above a 9" x 12" color portrait of "Admiral George Dewey" under a glass window with approximately 63 brass round-headed tacks neatly spaced in rows down to the nine slots at the bottom where the dropped coins would stop. Below that is a clear glass panel covering an area where coins would be visible to the player as an enticement to play. There is a catch in the back which, when pulled, drops the slotted coins into a bottom drawer (not present). This was most likely used as a "bar game" possibly with the players placing bets on which slot their Indian Cents, Barber Dimes, or Liberty Nickels (all available from our Rare Coins division if you desire absolute display accuracy) would eventually land. The condition is very good overall with some dampstaining and deterioration to the Dewey portrait. The original manufacture is a bit rough giving it almost a handmade appearance. An excellent display item from the Spanish-American War era and one that, over time, might even pay for itself!
