Admiral Byrd Neptunus Rex Certificate & Posters
Admiral Byrd Neptunus Rex Certificate and U.S. Safety Posters. The first item in this lot from the collection of Thomas B. Mulroy, chief engineer on Byrd's Arctic and first Antarctic expeditions, is a "Domain of Neptunus Rex" printed color certificate for the event of the Antarctic Expedition crossing the equator, 21" x 16.5", "signed" by Davey Jones and Neptunus Rex. It is an old seafaring tradition that all sailors who cross the equator during a voyage must undergo various rites and rituals initiating them into the Solemn Mysteries of the Ancient Order of the Deep. The successful completion of these rituals gives them the honorable title of "Trusty Shellback." This certificate is very desirable because of its association with such a landmark trip; fine condition, rolled with pinholes in the corners.

Also included are two identical posters from the United States P. & I. Agency Safety Department, circa 1930s, 17" x 22", picturing Rear-Admiral Richard E. Byrd in his polar gear with the headline "Never Lost a Man." Beneath the photo, the text reads "If everyone would always think ahead for safety as Byrd does, there would be very few accidents. These posters are in very good condition with some tattering around the edges, stored rolled.
