A report back to A. A. Van Guilder in Coloma, from L. Robie from Adams & Co. on three assays of gold recovered from amalgam. The assays varied between 876 and 891 fine in gold and totaled $3382.51 for the three lots weighing 200 troy ounces. A 1 1/2% charge for coining the gold was charged. The assays were probably performed by Kellogg & Co. who had a contract with Adams & Co. The coining of $20 gold pieces was established in the basement of the building adjoining Adams & Co. old banking house. Therefore the 1 1/2% for coining was Kellogg's charge because the San Francisco Mint would not open until two months later. San Francisco California Franklin Collection
