Lot of 6. Includes: 2nd of Exchange, San Francisco, 1854; 3rd of Exchange, SF, unused; 2nd of Exchange, Stockton, 1854; 2nd of Exchange, Nevada (City), 1852; pictorial draft from the Boston office, 1854; and unused 1850s receipt. An excellent pictorial group with multiple items having the classic Gold Rush sluice vignette! The Adams Express Company, founded in 1854, was one of the major American express shipping firms that specialized in transporting parcels, valuables, and financial instruments across the growing United States. Headquartered in Baltimore and later New York, it became a dominant force in express delivery alongside Wells Fargo and American Express, especially during the Civil War when it carried money and supplies for soldiers. Though it ceased express operations in 1918 after government consolidation of rail express services, Adams Express continued as an investment trust, evolving into today's Adams Funds.
