(Wo).€ 28.000 - 35.000 US $ 27.720 - 34.650 The prototype of this painting is the work of Louis de Silvestre belongs to the Dresden Gemäldegalerie, Inv. No. 3943,(H. Marx,"Die Gemälde des Louis de Silvestre in der Dresdener Gemäldegalerie", 1975, No.13, ill.). Oeser studied in Vienna under van Schuppen, Daniel Gran, Jan Mytens, and Raffael Donnner, the last becoming his close friend. He left for Dresden in 1739. The 'Thieme-Becker Künstler-Lexikon' states that it was Oeser who later "passed on Donner's idea of the 'noble simplicity and quiet greatness of antiquity' to Winkelmann". The sitter became Prince Elector of Saxony in 1694, a year after wedding Christiane Eberhardine von Brandenburg-Bayreuth. The present painting dates from his second assumption of the throne in 1716. He first took the throne in 1697, achieved solely through bribery and the conversion to Catholicism, but had to surrender the Polish crown in 1706 at the Peace of Altranstädt. Known as the Strong on account of his exceptional physique, he ruled Saxony until 1723, a period in which Dresden flourished. The invention of porcelain by Tschirnhausen and Boettger gave his country a whole new industry. Provenance: Schloß Dahlen in Saxony, built in 1744 - 1751 by Reichsgraf Heinrich von Bünau, was considered on of Saxony's most beautiful Baroque palaces. This was mostly due to its richly appointed interior, to a large part the work of Adam Friedrich Oeser, a friend of Winckelmann and a teacher of Goethe. Starting in 1756, Oeser spent three years creating the chateau's famous wall- and ceiling frescoes as well as a large number of portraits.
