Acrobats
1920s, or earlier, height 25.5 cm, the brass figure is cast using the lost wax method represents a pair of acrobats. The standing woman dressed in a skirt is holding her smaller partner, possibly a child, who is standing on his hands. The skirt is decorated by a geometrical pattern. On the up-stretched legs of the upper acrobat there is a rounded tin plate. Provenance: Fons (rep. Benin), Starting Price: CZK 28,000; USD 820; EUR 932, Estimated price: (30,000 - 34,000) CZK., The pair of acrobats is probably a part sculpture of a group, which is missing a weigh beam which used to be loosely placed on the top tin. There are also pairs of acrobats without a weigh beam. The figure comes from a set of genre sculptures which were cast in the 1920s (see the skirt pattern) and transported on a grand scale for the colonial exhibition held in Paris, 1931. Production of these genre figures started already at the end of the 19th century, immediately after the conquest of the Dahomey state by the French Army in 1892. The production follows up an even older tradition of figures made for court rulers.
