Acoma Pueblo Polychrome Painted Shield 1890-1900
The lot features an exceptional polychrome painted shield from the Acoma Pueblo Native American Indians of the Southwest dating to circa 1890-1900’s. The shield shows a polychrome pigment painted front showing a Buffalo figure with red horns and blue face showing red eye and mouth features with an outline of a stepped symbol at the center. Above the Buffalo shows three four-point morning stars in red and yellow and below three mounds in red and white with radiating yellow arrows. The front also shows yellow trade clothe ties at the top and two solid brass hawk trade bells, one found at each side. The back is marked in pencil, “Acoma, N.M.” along with a collection / museum tag marked, “4:6”. The bag shows two ties of purple dyed yarn and an old harness saddle leather handle which is brass tacked in place. The shield itself is constructed of a fiber board which has been wrapped in trade tent canvas and artfully painted with mineral pigment dyes. The piece shows good condition for its early age with signs of wear, slightly cracking and partially supple leather along with slight staining. Truly a fantastic piece in good condition with honest authentic age and fantastic effigy painting. Measures overall 12.75” by 12.25”.
