This is an original polychrome pictorial painted Indian tanned hide attributed to Ace Powell. Ace Powell (American 1912-1978) was a renowned Montana painter, sculptor and etcher who focused on the American Indians, cowboys, horses and wildlife of our great Big Sky state. His artwork was influenced by fellow Montana artist, Charles M. Russell. Ace was married to Nancy McLaughlin-Powell and father to Dave Powell. Provenance: The piece is from the Edwin (Ted) Byers collection out of Great Falls, Montana. Ted Byers commissioned this piece directly from Ace Powell during his lifetime. The piece was then inherited by Robert J. Byers of Polson, Montana and comes with a signed written history as stated above. The hide is most likely a Indian tanned deer hide which shows red and black painted pictorial ledger art of an Indian battle depicting Indian on horseback, tipis, scalping’s, and war along with language symbols. Also shown in the bottom corner are two shields, a war shirt, Buffalo headdress, arrow quiver and lance all done in the exact style and manner of known Ace Powell etchings. The artwork is not signed but is attributed to Asa Lynn “Ace” Powell. Original Ace Powell artwork is highly collectible with this being truly a unique piece. This hide measures 52" long and 41 1/2" at the widest.
