A scarce 18th-century French-language edition of Abrege de l'Histoire Generale des Voyages (Abridged General History of Voyages), Volume 23, published in Paris by Laporte, 1786. This volume is devoted entirely to Le Troisieme Voyage de Cook - Captain James Cook's Third Voyage (1776-1779) - and offers a remarkable early French account of Cook's final expedition through the Pacific, including encounters with indigenous peoples, trade, customs, and ultimately his death in Hawaii in 1779. The work is richly descriptive, chronicling natural observations, native cultures, and geographic discoveries. Bound in full period mottled calf with ornate gilt tooling to spine and raised bands, the volume exhibits typical age wear, including surface scuffs and cracking to the hinges, though the binding remains sound. The pages show foxing, toning, and minor edge wear consistent with age, but the text remains fully legible and complete. This edition was part of a broader Enlightenment-era effort to disseminate global knowledge in accessible abridged form, capturing the imagination of readers fascinated by far-off lands and the scientific advances of the age. Its focus on Cook's final voyage adds considerable historical and nautical importance.
