Oversized free-franked envelope portion, measuring as one 14.5 x 7 sheet, addressed in another hand, “[S]tanton Hospital, Washington, D. C.,” franked in the upper right, as president, “A. Lincoln,” and postmarked Washington, D.C., November 23, 1864. Envelope is also notated along the bottom by Mary Lincoln, “[Sen]t by the author to be presented by Mrs. A. Lincoln.” Portion of the reverse of envelope bears a complete red wax presidential seal. In good condition, with professional restoration to left edge, including a single letter of address and three letters of Mrs. Lincoln’s note, several tears, heavy creasing, with several creases lightly affecting both signatures, scattered toning and moderate soiling, and several vertical folds. All writing is quite light, but overall readable.
The Washington hospital had a unique tie to the sixteenth president. Named in honor of Lincoln’s secretary of war, Edwin M. Stanton, it operated from December 1862 to October 1865 and was constructed alongside Douglas Hospital. That care facility began operations in January 1862 by joining the former homes of Senator Stephen A. Douglas of Illinois and Vice President John C. Breckinridge, who served under James Buchanan. The two Democrats had split their party into northern and southern factions in the 1860 election, assuring Lincoln's victory. The same day he dispatched this correspondence, Lincoln me with the hospital’s namesake, Stanton, General Ulysses S. Grant, and other staff members to discuss the progress of the Civil War. Dual-signed items of President Lincoln and the First Lady are as desirable as they are scarce.
