War-dated partly-printed DS as president, one page, 17.25 x 12.75, August 10, 1861. President Lincoln appoints, “Charles D. Cleveland of Pennsylvania…Consul of the United States at Smyrna.” Signed at the conclusion in black ink, “Abraham Lincoln,” and countersigned by Secretary of State William Seward. In good condition, with professional repairs to folds and separations on reverse, some light toning and a vertical crease affecting Lincoln’s signature, scattered toning and foxing, professional restoration to paper loss at edges, end portion of Seward’s signature affected by repair. The seal is lightly toned, but crisp.
