Front page of The Fort Dodge Republican from Fort Dodge, Iowa, issued on October 4, 1862, 16.25 x 22.25, featuring one of the earliest printings of the Emancipation Proclamation west of the Mississippi. The third column is headed in bold, "The President's Emancipation Proclamation," and features the text of the president's order issued at Washington on September 22, 1862. In part: "That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free." In very good to fine condition, with one piece of clear tape affixed to lower left, and an irregularly trimmed edge.
