Free franked transmittal envelope, 5.5 x 3, addressed in Lincoln’s hand to “Hon. C. Sumner,” and franked in the upper right corner, “A. Lincoln.” Double-matted and framed with images of President Lincoln and Charles Sumner to an overall size of 20 x 12.5. In fine condition, with a tear to the upper left corner and spreading to ink in a few letters. Sumner was an ardent and outspoken abolitionist, at first clashing with Lincoln over the president’s less radical policies. Despite Sumner’s criticisms and Lincoln’s hesitation to follow his advice, the two had great mutual respect for each other and were ultimately working toward the same moral goals in the preservation of the Union and emancipation of slavery.
