War-dated handwritten endorsement, signed as president, “A. Lincoln,” on an off-white 3.5 x 2.5 slip clipped from a larger document, dated in Lincoln’s hand, “Jan. 14, 1864.” Lincoln writes: “Col. Daniel M. Cook of 52. Ohio for Brig. Gen. Submitted to Sec of War & Gen. in Chief. A. Lincoln.” Double matted and framed with a glossy portrait to an overall size of 15.25 x 12. In fine condition, with portions of first two lines underlined in blue pencil, a couple slight brushes to text, and a bit of scattered mild toning.
In the course of war there are always errors to be made—including the commander-in-chief misspelling the name of one of his officers...Colonel Daniel McCook, Jr., commander of the 52nd Ohio Infantry that was organized at Camp Dennison near Cincinnati, Ohio in August 1862. One of the famed ‘Fighting McCooks,’ the Union commander would die six months after receiving this message from the president. At the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, his old law partner, William T. Sherman, selected him to lead the assault, which he did until being shot in the lung by a Confederate rifleman on July 14, 1864. Great association between Lincoln and of one of the most prolific families in American military history.
