Partly-printed war-dated DS as president, one page, 15 x 18.5, April 4, 1862. President Lincoln appoints John B. Lewis a “Brigade Surgeon of Volunteers.” Signed at the conclusion by Lincoln, and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Moderate wrinkling and rippling, a few small areas of paper loss, show-through from mounting remnants on reverse, and a bit of trivial foxing, otherwise very good condition. The blue seal is intact and only slightly worn.

Union forces, especially members of volunteer regiments, were in need of skilled cutters like Dr. Lewis throughout the war. A native of Suffolk County, New York, Lewis was commissioned a surgeon in 1861 before receiving this promotion. After serving as medical director for General James Shields’ division of volunteers, Lewis—a participant in thirteen battles and skirmishes, including the Battle of Antietam—was placed in the charge of a hospital in Cumberland, Maryland until the end of the war. An always desirable Lincoln-signed Civil War appointment.
