Abraham Lincoln as Congressman
His Only Term in Congress -- Abraham Lincoln and House Colleagues Including Andrew Johnson. A rare combination of signatures "A. Lincoln Springfield, Ills." and "A. Johnson, Tennessee", both as U. S. Congressmen in a 6.25" x 7.75", 56 leaf (approx.) autograph album, Washington, 1848 , together with what appears to be the signatures of most of the Thirtieth United States Congress. A particularly rare piece considering that Abraham Lincoln only served one term in Congress when he defeated preacher Peter Cartwright in the Seventh District of Illinois... winning his seat despite a whispering campaign accusing Lincoln of atheism. Lincoln, the only Whig ever elected to Congress from Illinois, served a mere one term before returning to his law practice in Illinois. During his brief tenure, Lincoln was quite outspoken in opposition to the Mexican War. He would not hold another federal office until being elected President in 1860. Andrew Johnson served in Congress 1843-52 returning to Washington as a Senator in 1857. The two would, of course, be running mates in the Election of 1864. Other signatures in the album include future Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens, noted reformer and educator Horace Mann, together with David Wilmot, Robert Toombs, T. Butler King, and R. Barnwell Rhett. The album is bound in red tooled leather with a gilt motif of a maiden spreading flowers with gilt page edges. Several pages loose, but mostly very clean with light scattered foxing to a few, boards rubbed at top and bottom, else fine condition. An exceptional rarity.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)

Important notice:</
