Abraham Lincoln. Unsigned Autograph Document
Abraham Lincoln Unsigned Autograph Document. Sangamon Co. (Ill.), no date (docketed 27 November 1844), one page, folio. A reply to a bill filed by William Dormady against Isaac S. Britton, Robert B. Latham and Catharine Latham (the administrators and widow, respectively, of Philip C. Latham), signed by the latter three. They admit the truth of Dormady's allegations "except as to…payments alleged to have been made" on a real estate transaction, claiming that he still owes $65.45 rather than "about fifty dollars, as…alleged", and agree that upon payment of the correct sum to themselves, or to the court on their behalf, "a decree may be rendered according to the prayer of said bill…" Lincoln's text and Britton's signature appear on the recto; the signatures of the Lathams appear overleaf. Robert B. Latham was a Colonel of Union volunteers during the Civil War and co-founded Lincoln, Ill., the only town named for Lincoln with his express permission. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
