Abraham Lincoln Unsigned Autograph Document
Abraham Lincoln Unsigned Autograph Document. Sangamon Co. (Ill.), 18 March 1844, one and one-half pages, folio. A statement signed by Gershom Jayne in the case of William Carpenter vs Jayne and the President, Directors and Company of the State Bank of Illinois and Benjamin Watson and wife. While admitting that the plaintiff's bill "is substantially true", Jayne claims that in 1837 Watson gave him a promissory note secured by a mortgage on the land mentioned in Carpenter's bill. He "further charges that the mortgage debt, purchased by the complainant of the said Bank…is an original Bank debt… payable in the evidences of indebtedness of said Bank", wherefore he asks that "if the complainant shall have a decree for the sale of said land, that indebtedness of said Bank be received in purchase of the same, at par, so far as the proportion of said Bank debt is to that of the complainant's own original debt", and that any overplus be credited to Jayne's mortgage debt. Jayne, a physician, was a close personal friend of Lincoln. Near fine, penned in dark blue ink. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
