Abraham Lincoln Unsigned Autograph Document
Abraham Lincoln Unsigned Autograph Document. Sangamon Co. (Ill.), no date (docketed March 1840), one and one-quarter pages, folio. A petition made in the names of Gershom Keyes and Noah W. Matheny, "administrators of the estate of Charles R. Matheny deceased", who state that he died seized of various parcels of real estate, including some town lots in Petersburg, Menard Co. (the successor community to Lincoln's New Salem) and one lot in Enos's addition to Springfield. The named heirs are Matheny's widow Jemima and their children, including Mrs. Gershom Keyes and James H. Matheny ("best man" at Lincoln's wedding to Mary Todd). The personal estate being some $1260 short of meeting debts, the administrators ask "that they…be authorized…to sell the aforesaid real estate and apply the proceeds…to the payment of the debts due by the estate…" Fine frontal appearance; old glassine repairs to folds on verso are near but do not touch the text. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
